The explosion of the Internet has had a great impact on the world today. The Internet has changed the way individuals approach daily tasks and has caused many to change their daily routines. A lot of the change has been positive. Individuals now have access to a multitude of information at their fingertips anytime they want. People can use small handheld devices to connect to the Internet and those devices can also perform a variety of other tasks. A person can use their handheld cell phone to connect to satellites around the world and the Internet at the same time to get real live traffic updates and driving directions. Although, not all of the changes happening due to the Internet boom are positive.

One of the biggest problems on the Internet today is the plagiarism of content. Plagiarism occurs when someone takes work that was created by someone else and claims it as his or her own. The Internet has made it easier than ever to plagiarize because volumes of information are available at just a few clicks of a keyboard and mouse. Plagiarism can occur in regards to any medium including written works and audio. Content can be sampled from the Internet and copied into the work of someone else. This copied work is a plagiarism violation and is unethical.

Plagiarism can affect both parties involved in the original and the copied work. The original content creator has the possibility to lose credibility along with possible income loss. Content creators deserve to get credit for their work and sometimes that includes pay. If someone sells work and it is plagiarized and passed out for free on the Internet, the original content creator starts losing income. This is unfair to the original creator and if a copyright has not been filed for the original work, lines against the plagiarized work may become very blurry as the original content creator tries to prove they are the actual creator. There is an ethical element to plagiarism as plagiarism has intent behind it. The intent behind plagiarism is that the plagiarizer is trying to pass of someone else’s work as their own. They knowingly copy the work so that they get credit for it or claim an idea that is not theirs.

If you do not have the intent to plagiarize someone else’s work, there are several ways it can be avoided. The first way to avoid plagiarism is to write the paper without looking up information. Writing down information from memory will help you avoid plagiarism. The second way to avoid plagiarism is to write down all of your sources. When you start to research information, make a note of all of the places you find information you might use. Even if you do not use it, it is better to have a record of it so you do not have to scramble to find the source later on if you forget. A third way to avoid plagiarism is to make sure to cite your sources properly. If you are copying text directly from another author, you need to put quotations around the cited text. If you rephrase text from an article you need to put a source after the borrowed text.

In conclusion, plagiarism occurs when you copy someone else’s work with the intent to take credit for their work. You can avoid this by making sure that your work has proper citations and a reference page to give credit to the original author. It is important to cite the work because you have an ethical requirement to give credit where it is due. You wouldn’t want someone to steal your work, so do not steal from someone else.
